Hebrew word "Chen" hand painted on natural eucalyptus bark

What Does Chen Mean in Hebrew?

Chen is a small word that carries a large idea. In Hebrew it means grace, or favor, the kind that cannot be earned and arrives as a gift.

The word appears early in Genesis, when Noah finds chen in the eyes of the Lord, right before the flood changes everything. That single moment of favor becomes the reason a family, and the whole future, is carried safely through the storm. Esther, in the book that bears her name, wins chen in the eyes of King Ahasuerus, a moment that changes the fate of an entire people. Joseph, in Egypt, is given chen in the eyes of the prison warden, another small moment that turns the whole story around.

The root also hides in familiar names and phrases:

– Chana, the mother of the prophet Samuel, is named for chen
– Chanan, Yochanan, Elchanan, all of these names carry the same root inside them
– “Tachanun,” the prayer of humble supplication, comes from the same root, a plea for grace
– In modern Hebrew, chen also means charm, and a person who has chen is someone with a gracious, winning presence

There is something quietly comforting in a word that means unearned goodness. It reminds us that grace still finds its way to us, even now, even here, exactly as it found its way to Noah, to Joseph, and to Esther.
